  • Really good with a few flaws

I’ve been using YouTube music and I’ve loved it all these years of using it 6+. After using it both on android and iOS, I do wish they gave you the 10 seconds skip if you double tap the album cover instead of liking it and had a better shuffle system.
  • Is not a 4.8 here’s why

I asked chat gtp why YouTube music fell off and here’s why 1. Push Toward Mainstream and Monetization YouTube (and Google in general) has shifted its priorities toward mainstream, high-engagement content—often at the expense of personalization. That means: • More major label artists and trending tracks are pushed. • Less visibility for underground or niche artists you may actually prefer. • Ads, deals, and partnerships (with big labels or events) influence what gets featured. ⸻ 🧠 2. Over-Reliance on Recent Behavior The algorithm seems to weigh your most recent listening far too heavily: • If you played one upbeat pop song at a party? Suddenly your recommendations skew pop. • It doesn’t balance long-term preferences well anymore. ⸻ 🔁 3. Less Smart Discovery Old YouTube Music (and even older Google Play Music) was better at: • Surfacing deep cuts, B-sides, and lesser-known artists. • Recommending songs that were stylistically similar, not just genre-based. Now it often: • Recommends tracks just because they’re popular in the same broad category. • Loops the same few songs or playlists without variation. ⸻ 📉 4. Algorithm Fatigue & Poor Feedback Loops • Skipping a song doesn’t always signal that you disliked it. • “Thumbs up” behavior is weighed, but the nuance in what you actually want isn’t interpreted well. • It repeats tracks you’ve heard a lot, confusing frequency for preference. ⸻ 🔍 5. Decline in Human Curation There’s noticeably less: • Editor-curated playlists for niche genres. • Smart playlist blending (like Spotify’s “Daily Mix” with real depth). • Some long-time users feel like “Discover Mix” has become generic.

YouTube music is great cause you can listen to literally everything on YouTube whether it’s music or not. But I really wish the UI was top notch like Apple or Spotify.

Honestly, I’m not gonna lie, this has to be the best music app ever made. When you first make your account, you get a 2 Week free trial and when it’s over you barely get any ads, free skips, and you can play whenever at any time. The only downside is that you can’t play music while offline unless u got a downloaded playlist. In general I love this app and give it a 10/10 :)

  • The best streaming platform. (For a specific type of listener)

I have tried most of the major music streaming platforms, and YouTube Music is far and away my favorite, for the following reasons. 1. The recommendations are fantastic. I’m consistently finding great songs I’ve never heard before, but the ones I know and love are still in the mix when I skip around. 2. The library is fantastic. Because not only can you listen to songs that have been traditionally released as albums or singles, but you can also listen to music that was uploaded to YouTube. So if there are remixes, unreleased songs, covers, or long compilations that could never be on other platforms, you can have them in the same spot as all your other music. Just as long as they are on YouTube, and almost everything is on YouTube. I listen to music in the car a lot and the ability to say “Hey Siri, play (name of song on YouTube that isn’t released) and seamlessly play it without having to search or open another app, is a game changer. 3. The best bang for your buck. I already pay for YouTube premium, because I use it enough that the price feels justified, and I hate the ads. YouTube Music is included in that subscription. Yeah, it’s pricey. But the value is unmatched. You can cancel your Spotify subscription, and for just a few dollars more, get YouTube videos without ads, and with background play, along with YouTube Music. Totally worth it. 4. Lastly, the personalization is top notch. Like Spotify, you can pick artists you like to build your taste. But it also imports your liked songs from YouTube. It will also periodically ask you questions like “Make my mix more or less varied” You also have the option to build custom mixes, based on the types of music you want recommended, and what mood you want. All that being said, there are still some issues with the platform. As other commenters pointed out, the shuffle feature can be a bit finicky. Occasionally, it gets stuck in a loop, and you have to close the app, or spam the skip button to get it working again. It’s a rare event, but sometimes Spotify will have a standard release that is not available on YouTube Music. Also, it’s not as popular as Spotify. So if you wanna exchange your playlists with others, it can be annoying if they are not on YouTube music. It’s not perfect. But nothing is. And if you’re constantly listening to music, wanna hear a wide variety of different songs, that might might be available on other platforms, this is hands down the place to be.
