I have been using this app to hike the New England Trail but now it started crashing all the time when trying to zoom in on a place, it stopped recording our hike several times. Could be related to IOS 18 not sure but it is very frustrating now

This app is awesome. along with the trail map and elevation my main two concerns are where can I camp at and where can I get water at. A bonus is having comments on those to know if the stream is still running and if the campsites are big enough for multiple tents. this app has those however it just shows you where a campsite is without giving you details of the number of tents you can put in it. Sometimes you can see that in the comments, but it would be nice to have a number next to the campsite. My main downside to this app is it is very limited to specific trails. Mainly to long distance through hikes or very popular long-distance trails. There are many trails near where I live that are 10 to 30 miles long but are not on this app. so I find myself constantly using other apps because of this.

I’ve found this app essential for hiking the AT. The GPS function is especially reassuring.
  • I once loved this app, but no more.

I have been using this app since 2017. Guthook’s guide was great and useful. Since Atlas Guides purchased the app, it is no longer reliable. Last week, I was out near the PCT in Washington. I had downloaded the appropriate section on my new phone and even managed to do a couple of check ins before the app froze every time I tried to use it. I tried force closing it and restarting with no luck. I even tried shutting down my phone and restarting it, but still the app froze as soon as I turned on GPS. I sent a troubleshooting request to the developer last Thursday from my iPad, because I couldn’t send one from the frozen app on my phone. Clearly Atlas Guides doesn’t care. If I was depending on this app to navigate, I would truly be lost. I will never be able to trust them again.

Day 2 of my 4 day backpacking trip, the app decided to stop working. Like I would try to locate myself via GPS and it would freeze then crash. Thank GOD I downloaded my map on Gaia, which was perfectly reliable. Love the tent site/water source feature and comments but it’s pretty much useless if I can’t see where I am while I’m out in the remote wilderness (or use any of the aforementioned functions after I try to locate myself since it froze). Don’t appreciate it! Big thumbs down

  • Doesn’t show trails leading to AT

As a section hiker, I don’t have the luxury of simply staying on the Appalachian Trail and getting off and on at towns. I need to be able to enter and exit the trail and find easy parking. So it’s often frustrating for me to use FarOut to find places to enter and exit the trail because it ONLY shows the AT. None of the trails that connect up with it. Also, there are several places that were dubbed “parking spots” and I was like “ummm with what? A plow truck!?!” So I have to give it 3 stars. Otherwise, I’m happy with the app.

Great for mountain biking the Continental divide Trail. Much easier to find where you are now.
  • This App Is Not Reliable For Navigation.

App does a great job of showing you where places are along the trail, water, camping, lodging, etc but I have lost the trail or the red line on this app multiple times & sometimes at the most crucial of times. Do not count on this app as your only mode of navigation. The only way you can restore trail on map is to get to Wi-Fi & delete & redownload app. Garmin In Reach maps have been the only maps that have been reliable throughout the entire length of the PCT. FarOut could be a good app but I gave it 2 stars for its lack of reliability on the IPhone. Very frustrating & could be, should be a safety concern. iOS 17.5.1

Keep in mind if you get the subscription, your experience will change depending on which trail you select. I’ve been using Guthook/FarOut since my 2020 thruhike and the PCT map & waypoints have been excellent, with now the additional features of comment ranking and water source flow meter. However, I got the subscription in order to get the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) offline map for a section hike, and there was an annoyance where it takes a half-second once you tap on a waypoint for the info to pop up. I didn’t have this problem with the PCT offline map.
