App Articles Get Hijacked by Shady Ad Vendor
2
By thejlina
Since the latest update I find the app gets hijacked intermittently by shady full-page scam ad exploits, like “as an iPhone user you may have won” type things. This is the type of thing I expect to see from a low-quality website accessed via an unprotected web browser, not a paid subscription to a local newspaper accessed via their own app.
Please improve, as it really makes it seem like your product is not worth paying for if you’re further trying to monetize my attention via business with the type of shady ad services that would allow themselves to host page-hijacking spam instead of legitimate product placement.
Interface

Such a bad interface - why are all the articles repeated so many times on the homepage and why do I constantly have to sign in again and again. I rarely need to sign in with my nytimes password. It’s a very very frustrating interface and experience. Especially given that the monthly cost is so high.

This app has not loaded for the last two weeks for me. It is the ONLY app
I am having issues with and is up to date. May cancel my subscription to the paper over it.
Third rate newspaper

I pay $1/year under a special deal. That’s about what it’s worth. Generally pretty hard-left reporting, e.g., a riot is call a “social justice protest”. Unfortunately, it’s all Philly has for a newspaper.
Updated: mostly solid online edition of newspaper

Update December 2024: The app is now pretty solid and provides a good reading experience. It’s easy to navigate and double-clicking gets you a one-page version of an article (vs paging through the “paper” to get to the rest of an article.
That said, there’s a basic feature missing. You should be able to “clip” any article and share it. There are many times where I want to share an article with family or friends, and there’s no consistent way to do that. Sometimes I can email an article to myself, but I often end up with just a pdf containing only the headline. And if I search for the article online via a browser, it’s often not found anywhere.
>>> I want a save/share button that lets me (1) save a pdf of the article, (2) print the article, and (3) save a link to the article.
Original: This app is absolutely no substitute for a subscription to the Inquirer. I expected that since I’m a subscriber I’d get the same material I get from the paper. But no - no comics, no obits, no Carolyn... not sure what else is missing. I got frustrated and gave up. Navigation is terrible - most news apps will at least give you a handy menu or method to go from section to section. Haven’t found that yet. And just for the record Dear Abby is a terrible substitute for Carolyn.
Print version missing?

Where is the newspaper version with the latest release?
UPDATE: As advised by the developer it is not missing. Just accessed a different way. I changed my rating to 5 stars since it is still a great app
Great app - Biased News

The app is great, it really is. The sports section is good. My issue is the Political Bias. All the major publications and cable news outlets do it, we all know that. However, I turn to local news to get the facts, not the “journalists’ feelings and opinions”. Sad to see that Philadelphia inquiry do this.
Review

This is a rag. The editorials are one sided and spread venom with their misinformation. A fair an independent press is important but this paper is a left wing rag. I only subscribe for the sports and crossword puzzle. It would be laughable if it was not such a shame and disservice to the Phila area.
This Media Outlet is ruined

Let me preface this review by stating I am an independent. In every election my vote goes to the candidate that I believe best fits the tasks at hand. Over the years I have voted on both sides of the aisle. Which brings me to the Philadelphia Inquirer. This media outlet used to be an institution in the city of Philadelphia. Reporting the news to keep its citizens informed. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. What has happened to the integrity of its journalism!? A journalists occupation is to report the news, allowing people to formulate their opinions based on the facts presented. This media outlet has become an Op Ed dish rag. The bias in each and every article is so blatantly obvious. I have had enough and am choosing to cancel my subscription for this very reason. I yearn for a media company that just reports the news. It is difficult to find these days.
I love the Inquirer!

I subscribe to the Times and the Post, where I have frequently been outraged by the bias in their news reporting. In that context, I am constantly pleased with the news and editorial coverage that I get from the Inquirer. In particular, the Editorial page takes brave stands and “tells it like it isl” Bravo!
