Description

History Book automatically saves your browsing history for searching later. By default, it only auto-saves pages that contain an article, so you don’t have to worry about it saving your sensitive data. If you want, you can configure it to auto-save every webpage. If you are feeling paranoid, you can disable auto-save entirely. You can also exclude websites that you never want to auto-save. You can use it as a read-it-later app, but I mostly use it as a search app. For privacy reasons, History Book stores your browsing history in iCloud. Apart from the iCloud sync, History Book does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. History Book has no in-app purchases, no ads, and no tracking. It’s a universal purchase, so you only have to buy it once to use it on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Caveat: - The app uses readability.js to check whether a webpage is readable. It is likely to produce both false positives and false negatives. - The app is written in SwiftUI, which means there are some not-quite-standard behaviors and UI bugs that I can’t fix. - The app uses iCloud for syncing. Note: The “can read and alter webpages” text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. History Book needs access to the web page to save the content. It’s not doing anything creepy!

Family purchase friendly. If you web search on iOS safari and need to find an article you read in the past this is a very good utility. Useful when doing research papers or twitter battles. You have to turn it on in settings/safari/extension and it can only see stuff starting from when you turn it on.
  • Almost perfect. Missing visible scrollbar though:

It’s tough to scroll on long pages when 1. I can’t just pretend the scrollbar is anywhere on the side and use it and 2. the scrollbar isn’t visible and the known position is required to use. I would like to see And A Dinosaur take it to the next level and allow me to scroll from any point on the scrollbar: reinvent the scrollbar please! You’re already halfway there! Also, this app seems very HTML5 oriented, so websites that don’t utilize the
and other HTML5 tags may not display. However, it works just fine and makes me much happier saving everything. The save delay is a slight concern, and hopefully it doesn’t ever become an issue. I can already foresee minor drawbacks of 1. not having a front-end optionally selected delay and 2. losing out on anything because the used delay was too short. I guess we’ll figure it out eventually. I always expected Apple to release this app, but I’m happy with how things have turned out.

I do like it but any reason we can't have plugins for chrome and firefox?

I’ve been waiting for something like this since I first started using the web almost 30 years ago. Perfect design that does exactly what it should.
  • Works Great and is the coolest new app I’ve seen in a couple of years.

This is a fantastic extension. The design is nice and it does exactly what it says on the tin. I love that it emphasizes privacy and doesn’t rely on a subscription (though I’ll definitely be tipping from time to time if I can find a tip jar IAP). It’s the rare app that still gives the “i can’t believe what my device can do” feeling from the early 2010s, but this is one of them.

Love how this app works. Remembers everything and the layout is great. Would be great to have the option of parsing articles into folders from safari, and maybe a font of reading mode that utilizes something like the Bionic reading API or the dyslexia font to help with easier reading. Still, Great app.
  • It doesn’t work

A waste of money. The app doesn’t save or search anything. Nothing happens, other than you get a bill from Apple.
