  • Great on iOS, pretty bad on the desktop

Looks like the developer checked whatever boxes were needed to publish this to the Mac App store and called it a day. The app is slow, buggy and lacks basic polish (toolbar icons are cut off, moving between views requires a click/drag like it's a touchscreen, menubar order is nonstandard). Considering this was an additional purchase, I expected a little more attention to detail. The good news is that it syncs well enough so it does the basic job as expected.
  • Glitchy and unimpressive

I found this to be extremely glitchy and crashes all the time. I hate that it doesn't have any way to track your savings or current money. This is solely an expenditure log.
  • Amazing on iPhone/iPad, just OK on Desktop

Pennies is a great app for people like me. We keep a master budget Airtable system for our household, so what I needed was a dead simple transaction logging tool. Pennies is exactly what I was searching for. I can create the budget categories I use, configure a resetting pool of money (twice monthly cycle for me), and track purchases against the buckets of my spending budget. It is a perfect tool for this use case. The iPhone and iPad (as well as the Apple Watch version) apps are well designed, fast and accurate (including iCloud syncing), and match the system interfaces. The color system is clever. I wish the app icon was slightly more "grown up." Unfortunately, I've had a few nagging issues with the MacOS app. Functionally it's exactly the same, however I have experienced repeated instances of freezing, interface issues (values on top of other values, or values not updating correctly), and modals not closing when commanded. None of this breaks the experience really, but the MacOS app just doesn't have the same fit & finish of the mobile versions. Really the only thing keeping me from a 5-star rating. I've tried (too) many budgeting apps. Most do too much, a lot are outdated, and some are downright ugly. Pennies does exactly what I need, is well-designed, and syncs perfectly across devices.

UPDATED 11/15/10 (1 Star to 4 Stars) Still using this daily on my phone, and wanted to give the desktop another try. The last update helped a ton. There are still a few quirks, but it no longer feels half-baked, and it's been a useful part of my budgeting flow. OLD REVIEW: First up, I LOVE Pennies on the iPhone - but this is a clear quick port with tons of problems, and an 17.99 prince tag to boot. There are tons of mobile placeholder elements (the date picker, for one), typing in amounts randomly stops working (forcing you to tap amounts in with your mouse), and things just...vanish. I tried a few times, even reset my mac to see if that was the issue, but nope. First time I've ever requested a refund, which is too bad. Again, Pennies is great on mobile, but clearly it wasn't ready for the Mac.
  • Just what I was looking for

I recently retired, and wanted an easy way to track my day to day spending to ensure I stayed on track. This is a great little app to do just that for me. Having to input every expense is eye opening and definitely makes you think twice about how quickly things add up. Since I only get "paid" once a month now from my pension, this helps me keep on track. Super simple for me since I only made one budget-how much I have available to spend each month. Each time I add an expense the amount available goes down. It's also helpful to make notes on each expense so when I'm reviewing the expenditures, I can remember what each expense was for. I only have the desktop version; I don't have the phone app version.
