  • Sometimes Amazing, Often Too Glitchy

I have been using Bookshelf for about a year now. I love the app, love the layout, the yearly recap, al of it. BUT lately the app glitches for me in some way every single day. Lately, I’ll pause a reading session to do something then when I go to start it again, it starts but the time says it’s been running for the entire time I’ve had it paused. There have been a few times when I know I’ve met my reading goal for the day but then it sets back my reading streak for no reason - not even restarts it at 0, just drops from 31 to 17 for no reason. Also recently, some of my reading sessions aren’t showing up in “View Reading Sessions” under that book. But where it says “Pages Read” that shows the correct number of pages read even without the reading sessions showing up. Then if I try to read the reading session it counts the pages for the session that’s not showing up and the redo, double counting the pages in the “Pages Read” section. I’ve tried reaching out through the app about all of these and haven’t heard anything back and I’ve messaged several times. I hope they can get these things fixed because I don’t want to have to switch tracking apps but I might if I have to keep dealing with all of these glitches.
  • Would appreciate app support

I have a lifetime subscription and I've submitted a total of 3 support requests to the developer and they have all gone unanswered. Following the app updates, about ten books went missing from my Finished list. I have iCloud setup but would appreciate some developer guidance before I restore to a previous backup. This is a really great app. I hope the developer sees the importance of interacting with its customer base.
  • this is the holy grail of book apps?

INCREDIBLE for the ultimate book nerds dude!!! i am obsessed i cannot wait for this app to become my personality while i transfer over my goodreads library. i like to book journal and this app is SO SO GOOD FOR THE DATA. loving: i can easily track my own library / tbr / read. i can add notes & quotes & definitions so easily. i can track how long i’m reading. i am??! missing how to rate/review the books and add stars bc it says i can do that but WHERE (also i wrote this 5 star review even knowing that I’m missing a big chunk of what I want this app to do for me… It’s still 50 stars) (also i’ve read over 90 books this year so like i’m pretty serious about this)

crashes within five seconds of opening the app. I started a reading session that I am unable to stop or cancel. I understand that bugs are unavoidable but this is ridiculous.
  • New update has broken the app

The latest update continually asks to upgrade (I’m a paying member) and resets my reading statistics almost every time I hope the app. It’s useless until another update comes out to fix these issues.
  • Good, but not for what I wanted

I like the app, I got it awhile ago when it had minimal features and from there it’s only gotten better. The problem I have is I’m not someone who likes to track my reading daily, I just want to track which books I’ve read per year and set monthly goals, which is quite easy to do on the app. I’m not gonna pull out my phone to start recording my reading minutes, because that just takes the fun out of reading for me, so when I look at my statistics page, most of my stats like: reading speed, minutes per day read, streak, and pages read are at 0 which just makes the app look less smooth to me. It definitely seems like a great app for those who want to get back into reading, but for just book tracking, I think it needs more options.
  • Useless and a waste of time…

Spent over an hour trying to set up my library, had major issues with the correct book information being found based on the scanned barcodes. Either the images of the books wouldn’t load right, the publishing information was always off, or it would pull completely incorrect book info. Once I finally went through and manually corrected everything, set up my library and collections and entered my reading progress… lo and behold now you gotta pay an insane subscription price to use the useless app. Deleting immediately! Plenty of other basic free apps out there that work much better!
  • Brilliantly designed library manager

I’ve used Bookshelf for at least a year now. It’s brilliantly designed with native Swift UI libraries, the developer finds creative ways to effectively incorporate Apple’s latest libraries into the user experience, and it is actively-developed with few critical bugs. It has nearly all the features you could dream of in a book management app. The developer of this app is incredibly talented and has created a magnificent app that I look forward to using almost as much as I look forward to the reading I’m tracking. My personal favorite feature is being able to categorize books into “Owned, “Borrowed,” “Wishlist,” etc. It helps me stay organized, and is also useful when I end up in the bookstore and am wondering what books I should look for :) The app has a new crowd-sourced feature request interface, but I’ll put my two cents here: it’d be great to be able to share your library or create a shared library with family members or other iCloud users. A great example of this done well is the Mela recipe manager app. Lastly, I’m a big advocate for open/public source software. Opening up your codebase doesn’t necessitate a large support burden (as long as the expectations are clear). But it does open the door for other motivated developers to help solve critical bugs or add features. Plus, there may come a day when you won’t want to maintain this app anymore—iOS development can be exhausting—and this app is too good to die! Keep up the great work. Thanks for the beautiful app ❤️
