Description

Suggester is a tool to assist in the creation of songs and chord progressions. This app will help you find chords that work together. It is efficient and fun; use it to build musical phrases that will carry emotion through tension and release. Select chords for their harmonic function. The app makes full use of the roman numeral notation. Simply click a chord to hear how it sounds. Press the play button to hear the chord progression sequentially and adjust the playback speed. You can work either forward or backward: FORWARD - Pick a scale, then build your song from the chords that the app suggests. That's the quickest way to assemble chords that are compatible. BACKWARD - From the catalog, pick a set of chords that you like. The app will tell you what scales it matches with. After you have selected the scale you want to use, the app can tell you what chords will fit in with the ones you entered before. That is extremely useful in jam sessions! Pick chords from our huge catalog. Your exotic chord type is not in the catalog? You can still build it by creating a custom chord. To spice things up, you can borrow chords from parallel scales. Explore new territories by using modulation. Browse the classic chord progressions to find inspiration. Use Drag and Drop to reorder chords. Export your songs as audio, MIDI or text. Every sound generated with the app is also sent to the MIDI output, configurable in the Preferences. You can route these notes to another app, an external MIDI port, or a MIDI Network Session. You can trigger chords through the MIDI input. Sync your tempo with other apps with the help of Ableton Link. Drag a chord directly into any app that supports MIDI drag and drop, such as Ableton Live or Logic Pro X. You can choose between the english notation (C, D, E) and the fixed-do notation (do, re, mi). It includes all the features you like from the iOS version, plus a bunch of improvements: Multiple documents at the same time, drag and drop between apps, right-click menus... and more! The iOS version is sold separately. I purchased SUGGESTER a few of years ago to help me understand chord progressions within different modes, and to try out modulations to different keys. Since then, the developer has responded to suggestions and has continued to greatly improve the program. It is easy to use and can output your work for use with DAWs and scoring programs. What I am grateful for, is that Suggester still runs on my older Mac (10.13.6). So many apps have stopped supporting older, yet still very functional computers. Try and buy… you will become a better musician. Thanks, Mathieu.
  • Add highlight to chords and scroll the progression

I have both apps, for iPhone and Mac, I really like them a lot but something is missing in the mac version. On iPhone when clicking on play, the chord progression highlights for each chord played and scrolls down to the end of the progression, why not do the same in the mac application, Adding these two features would help the user a lot, knowing what chord is being played and also see the progression scroll until the end of it is a must to have, please add highlight to chords and scroll the progression to the end, and this app is a winner!. Thank you
  • I really like this app!

The app as a whole is extremely helpful for my songwriting, especially since I am not versed in piano at all, and I'm theory-challenged. My only concern is just that there's a little issue with Copying and Pasting sections sometimes! It generally works but not for the beginning of the song maybe?? I'd give 5 stars if that bug got squashed 😊
  • Suggester is an excellent addition to my music production arsenal.

I've been using Suggester for about two months. It has been extremely helpful on an arrangement updating project. I've been telling my music making friends about it. This supplements my musical abilities and makes up for my inability to compose and arrange music on the piano the way I would like to. This app is sooo easy to use and is reasonably priced. I was surprised to have received several updates since purchasing it. Long story - short I love it.
  • Great Tool

This is such a great tool. I've had the iOS version for a couple of years, but I just discovered the mac version and was blown away. It has every nuance that you would think of when composing a song with chord progressions, from the scale, to the chord quality. The ability to export Midi and use Ableton link is dope!

Aloha from Honolulu— I've owned Suggested for many years, but it took a YouTube video to open my eyes re. how best to use it. Now that I've "got it," Suggester is an indespensible composition tool, especially if you start with a chord progression (as I do). What's become liberating is the ability to work out chords and chord sequences in Suggester, then drop the MIDI straight into Logic Pro X. Do that chord by chord and the chords are labeled in your time line! (Very, very useful in certain, complicated compositions.) I've been amazed at how the app keeps getting updates, and even more amazed at the developer's resonsiveness to issues. Add to that the music theory you absorb just by using Suggester and... it's hard to praise it enough. Highly recommended!
  • a little klunky but still the best available

The interface here is a bit klunky. I keep trying to do things like duplicate chords or sections and they aren't supported gestures. And there are dozens of others like this that are just very unlike most mac applications. And there's no meter or bar counter so I'm constantly counting manually to see how long my section is so far. But this is still the fastest and easiest app I've tried for banging out chord changes. Easy to audition new chords. All the chords I look for exist. And the chord organization makes sense. (None of which are true with many others). The sounds are minimal but completely appropriate for this. My wishlist is long, but I use this app often and I recommend it frequently.

This App is a GAME CHANGER. This new update made it so easy to interface with LPX. Even just for ideas....this thing it beautiful. App is worth more money IMHO.
  • Uh-oh, no sound output!

    1) Loved this app on iOS enough to want to pay for the MacOS version. This app deserves more stars, but for the bad bug noted in (5). 2) This iOS port is missing the Mac-standard option-drag for duplication. Easy chord duplication much needed in the app. 3) App sorely needs a Play-next-chord key command (and a Play-next-chord-within Section key command (to stay looped within section). 4) Small bug: For the very first-listed chord in a key, drag-and-drop fails. All other chords can be dragged into your list. Not that one! 5) BAD BUG: This app is non-functional when used with laptop in clamshell mode. No sound output. :( Details: App produces no sound output when my MacBook Pro is used in clamshell mode with external cinema display. No choice of system setting for sound output destination makes it make sound (though other apps do): not thru built-in speakers, not thru analog headphone port, not via usb to display audio, not via displayport to cinema display. Obviously, this app is pretty helpless without sound output! When my laptop is open and being used as a standalone workstation, the app sound output delivers as expected. Macbook Pro running High Sierra.
