My son was behind in reading and it was a struggle trying to teach him myself. But after just 1 week of doing the Hooked on Phonics lessons, I saw such a huge improvement!! I love the way the program is structured and how they make it fun for the kids. It’s been a month now and I am so proud of how far my son has come. I’m a huge believer in Hooked on Phonics and recommend it to anyone!!!
  • Shwa = Bad Pronunciation

Too many individual sounds in the app are pronounced incorrectly as they add a shwa at the end of the sound. This is not the correct way to learn phonics.

I cancelled my subscription way before my trail ended because it’s just videos they watch. And still got charged. And all they could offer was half a return. Will never recommend this program to anyone especially since you get find better videos on YouTube.

We started this program in the beginning of September for my then newly 4 year old. (Turned 4 in July). He really took off with the program! He has an older brother whom I homeschool so that helps him be motivated too. There were times we were devouring a workbook in a day or two. I had the company send me 3 books at once at one point because he was going through them so quickly. The app is great and engaging enough, though recently we have not been on the app as much. I prefer to get a pencil in their hand and have them work with paper and their hands, but the app is definitely a great teaching tool. (The program includes workbooks with books to read to them, and a subscription to the app, usually he was working ahead in the app than he was in the book but it worked out for us.) They do send updates weekly I believe of what your child is doing well in and where they need help. I didn’t take these too seriously since I knew what he was doing well with, but it was nice to see what lessons he had completed and all. Yesterday was the first time we started the “Learn to Read” workbooks and he is now reading -at and -an family words and they are included in the workbook in a story form for the child to read. The program has been amazing and I am so happy that we started this! The program teaches all letter sounds, and eventually some of the different sounds consonants make (like a c, and g have 2 sounds…) this isn’t super focused on since they need to know the “hard” letter sounds first, so sometimes he gets confused when he sees a “c” but is able to understand when I told him we dont need to read it with an s sound right now. They also learn long vowel sounds in the last book before the learn to read books. He has long been able to tell me what a capital and lower case is, knows all his letter sounds by sight, even long vowel sounds, soft and hard consonant sounds, can recognize rhyming words and put them together, points out letters and is obsessed with writing letters, that’s all he does sometimes, even drawing letters with a bar of soap on the shower wall! Dont get discouraged if your child isn’t instantly reading, I assume when they say they will be reading in a month, they mean that they will recognize and be able to “read” letter sounds and recognize letters…but in 4 short months we have come so far!! I would recommend this program to anyone who is wanting to get their child an early start! I am a bit worried he will be bored in homeschool Kindergarten! Lol. Thanks HOP for giving me the reader I wanted!

I enjoy the simplicity of the program, it is easy for me to do with my 3 year old. My daughter enjoys the games on the app, we sing the songs together and it is very fun! The books are AWESOME. She could only recognize two letters before we began and now she can recognize letter names AND sounds of 18 letters!

My 4yo started on the learning to read section and was reading the words in the small books by the end of the lesson. I could hardly believe it, it happened so fast!

My 3 year old has been using the app for a few months and it (along with our phonics work-practice if individual letter sounds) is helping her start to blend. The lessons progress well by teaching kids word families. The one area I would improve is the pronunciation of the short letter sounds. I would remove the “uh” sound from letters like /b/ /c/ /p/ /h/ etc. I think the “uh” sound makes it more difficult for kids to blend as they progress in their reading development.
