Description

No Signup. No Login. Celebrating its 12th year as a mobile app, and their 14th online, the Wise Pilgrim Guides are the go-to source of up-to-date information on the Camino de Santiago. The app is updated regularly with new content and new features and offers you the ability to leave tips for pilgrims following behind you. This guide covers the Camino Francés, the most popular route across Spain. It has been redesigned and now works almost exclusively offline (to share your comments with others will require a data connection). As more an more albergues share their WiFi this becomes less of an issue, and the guide will tell you which ones offer WiFi. Accommodation Directory: A full directory of Albergues, camping, hotels, pensions, paradors, and cases rurales. Over 900 in total, with special attention to those that can be booked online. Stageless Guide: No more "stage anxiety" or guide created bottlenecks. Maps: Offline and online versions of a beautiful topographical may will give you a good view of the terrain ahead. Photos: Photos of albergues, monuments and other points of interest along the way. Currently 900+ images and growing. Scrollable Elevation Map: This one is hard to show with just a screenshot, but the elevation that appears at the top of every city page scrolls East to West. One complete elevation, from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago, uninterrupted by page folds. Comments: Albergue closed early for the season? Have a restaurant that you want to share, or perhaps one to warn others about? Every location in the app gives you the opportunity to leave a comment and to read the comments left by others. No registration necessary. ¡Buen Camino and thank you for your support!

  • Easy to use, helped me get back on track

Used this app for 500 miles. I used it daily. I was able to see when I deviated from the path a few times and the reviews for paths, lodging and cafes was very helpful. I could link to wahstsapp numbers for lodging to call ahead for a bed. Developer is very responsive to feedback. I’ll use the portugal version for my next camino.
  • Super-useful walking aid

Most useful for me were the offline map and the user albergue reviews. The first helped me numerous times to keep my bearings even when I couldn’t count on a cellular connection. The camino is well-marked but even so there are plenty of points when I got a little turned around, and this offline map helped me get back on track. The second was invaluable for choosing where to stay at night. I didn’t always choose only based on this guide but I often benefited from warnings of a bedbug issue or else just glowing comments about a given albergue. It lef me to many wonderful places and people. A third praiseworthy thing that occurs to me is the local historical and cultural info given on many towns. It gave me things to look out for or ways to appreciate where I was and what I was seeing. This context offered good reminders since it was often easy to forget about everything except the matter of walking, eating, and sleeping (of course that was good in its own way). I did use a print guide also and google from time to time so I cannot say what a Camino would be like using only this app guide. Regardless, I am very glad I had it (I still look at it from time to time to remember the experience).
  • Not ready for prime time

A little bit more development would have made this a great app. It appears to have been rushed to market without a final proof. Lots of distance errors, the online map is worthless because the map symbols overlay the route making it impossible to use. Distance to any destination apparently is as the crow flies, not matching the apps text descriptions. It is necessary to drag along a competitive guide to double check whatever this guide tells you. That makes this guide redundant in the overall scheme.
  • exactly what I needed!

I walked part of the Camino in June 2018 and found this app incredibly helpful overall! Unlike many other pilgrims, I did not have to stop and unpack a bulky guidebook every time I wanted to check distances or find the closest bar. All I had to do was pull out my phone and voila! Overall, I found the descriptions of albergues/towns and the route of the camino itself very accurate. Some of the prices of the albergues were slightly different but otherwise everything was great and I did not have any surprises. I also found the elevation profile very helpful for quickly visualizing distance between pueblos and the amenities offered. The online map was also very useful. For some reason, my phone tracks my GPS location accurately even on airplane mode without wifi so I was always able to know exactly where I was on the map. The map itself was very accurate. The only small annoying thing was that every time you open it, it resets to the standard starting place. Overall, I would recommend this app to anyone looking to get accurate maps and information about albergues and pueblos along the way. I found it to be a very good, and often more up-to-date alternative to carrying around a heavy guidebook. 10/10 :)
  • Crashes too much to be relied upon

The app includes decent information from what I've been able to gauge. But the app crashes more than 50% of the time. There are times when you cannot get it to work when you need to make a decision about the way to go. You just can't count on it...
  • Quit working

I bought this app because I don’t want to carry a guidebook on my Camino. However, every time I try to open the app, it immediately quits working.
  • Doesn’t work on iPhone X

  • Three Bits of Advise

When talking to people planning their Camino I give them three bits of practical advise: 1. You don’t need boot—use trail running shoes. 2. Learn some Spanish. 3 Get the Wise Pilgrim app.
  • Disappointing, irregular functionality

This app’s functionality is highly disappointing. I’m on the Camino now, and more often than not (about 90% of the time), it does not open correctly. That is, the screen open the immediately closes. However, when I view all of the currently open apps, it shows the app as being open. About 25% of the time, I can open the app from there. But the other times I need to close the app fans start over/try again later. When it works, the information is useful.
  • Just okay.

Crashes upon open frequently, but just click it 3 or 4 times and it works, so maybe 2 stars would be more appropriate. Not optimized for iPhone X screen size. Used it for partial Camino from SJPDP to Fromista in 2017. Like the elevation profile. Albuergue guide a bit basic but complete, a narrative review might be nice or more user comments would be nice. Comments are recent only. Decent narrative for route but a bit difficult to access, you tap The Provinces, the you find your area. Took a bit to discover that. No offline map, so I downloaded competitor app thar has gps and oggline map. No customizable schedule/route.
