  • Ruined by Greed

I’ve used Meetup for over a decade and used to love it, but I’m now considering deleting the app due to the new owners’ excessive greed destroying the platform. Organizer fees have skyrocketed to a ludicrous $300/year, and requiring people to pay to see who else is attending events is not only an inconvenience, but a massive safety risk. Multiple people have told me they’re leaving Meetup because they don’t feel safe attending events with people whose identities are hidden. It might be the single most shamelessly exploitive paid feature I’ve ever seen on an app, and the owners should be ashamed.
  • Was a Great App Back in the Day

The app is good and meeting new people through this medium is great but they’ve let greed get to them. The app has tons of adds now and they’ve introduced this premium subscription and you need it in order to see who’s else has RSVP’d to an event. It wasn’t always like that but they wanted to squeeze money out of its users.
  • Not nearly as good as the website

There’s lots of annoying things about this app. The main one is that it’s not easy to search for events. There’s also an annoying feature where you swipe on events. When I try to search for events in my area that are in person (in a major city) nothing shows up for “upcoming” events and you otherwise can’t search past the weekend.
  • Tons of ads preventing a good user experience

I wanted to like this app, but the constant barrage of app advertising pop-ups makes it nearly impossible to enjoy. While navigating the app, an intrusive ad interrupts whatever task I'm trying to complete. It's not just a minor inconvenience—it disrupts the entire experience. Even when trying to navigate through simple features, I'm bombarded with full-screen ads. It's frustrating because the app itself has potential, but the sheer volume and aggressiveness of the ads turn what could be a great tool into a constant source of irritation. I understand that ads are necessary for free apps, but this is over the top. Until there's a way to reduce the ad frequency or a paid version to remove them entirely, I can't recommend this app to anyone looking for a smooth, enjoyable experience So many hosts are now transitioning from the Meetup app to groups on Facebook now that we have a user base.

I canceled my subscription 3 months ago, yet after 3 months, they are STILL deducting money from my account. This is a very dirty, very mean, and dishonest charge. Very disappointing experience

Not as useful anymore since they’re starting to put everything behind a paywall
  • It’s actually crazy

They removed the ability to see all members now unless you pay which is pretty insane! Imagine being so greedy.

Update:Sadly all changes recently done to the app has make me low the rating. Original: While many apps are short-lived, not only because they are built only for profit but also because they fail to recognize the user’s needs, Meetup has been here for a long time. It is an excellent tool to meet people and search for hobbies. Of course, as in any place, you depend on the kidneys and truthfulness of the people or organization behind the group, but luckily enough, I have found great ones to follow. This app deserves five stars.
  • Not the same as it used to be

They make you pay to view who’s attending the meetups you’re interested in.
