  • Propagandist death rattle of a dying newspaper in a dying town

Lazily and poorly written newspaper offers a fitting obituary to the once fine city whose demise it not only chronicled but whose folly it helped expedite.
  • Mid

The definition of a mid app. What is there works ok, but lack of search for a news app is unacceptable.
  • Updated review: excellent journalism, ads awful

Article refresh schedule seems to have been tweaked and is much better. Lack of search for archives or the day’s paper is annoying, but search in general is a mess at the moment and frankly no search is better than AI searches. The ad inserts are problematic because they interfere with phone scrolling, being so oversized. The facsimile app allows you to print out crosswords and take ‘em on the ferry. Previous review: It cannot be this difficult to write an app that automatically yanks the full text of every posted article off a server and dumps it into the app. How many programmers are there in Seattle? Apparently the Times can hire none. No search. Incomplete content. Links open outside the app. Yesterday’s news today. No font size adjustment (for something whose readership certainly trends towards needing reading glasses). Come ON. Update: the late-to-never article posting has been fixed, but links still open outside the app. No good reason exists for a user to have to log in multiple times to read something referenced in a current article.
  • Will not accept my login info

I have a subscription to the Seattle Times but this app refuses to allow me to log in, insisting it does not recognize my email/password. Infuriating!
  • Why Can’t I Zoom In On Photos?

I can’t, for the life of me, understand why zooming in on photos no longer works in the app.
  • Bidease ads open too easily

The ads delivered by bidease like the gopuff one open just because I happen to scroll over it. Extremely annoying behavior and fake clicks for the ad.
  • Enable Pinch to Zoom Photos and Illustrations

Used to be a feature. Now only allows fit to screen width. Bring back pinch to zoom so viewers can zoom in on photos and read illustrations on phone.
  • Like news, like app

Both are garbage. Subscribing to the app via the App Store doesn't enable access via the web. The app has no search function, arbitrarily switches back to the front page with no go back feature so you can resume reading, doesn't show the comments appended to the article and doesn't allow comments to be made. Then again, the ST arbitrarily decides to block comments on articles with a stated policy that they abandon on a whim, especially when readers criticize their sloppy journalism. Being in Boeing's back yard you'd think they would put a competent person to report on aerospace matters, instead they've got a mathematician who pretends competence in aeronautical engineering and feigns knowledge of what goes on inside Boeing and passes off erroneous speculation based on his grotesquely mangled understanding of aeronautics as fact. No abiding by the Journalist's Code of Ethics here, too busy desperately cranking out sensational click-bait to lure readers to their advertising or tricking readers into paying twice for the rubbish they spew out, so they can pay the electric bill and take one last dying gasp before being rendered obsolete by the internet. The truth dies at the Seattle Times.
  • The worst

App I have ever had the displeasure to use. It is truly beyond me how the Seattle times app is rated over 4.5. It is completely useless. Articles do not open approximately 70% of the time, poor sorting options, godawful loading for images. I use an iPhone 13 plus on fiber internet and have zero issues with other, much more demanding apps. Save your time and just login online, the experience is infinitely better.
  • Lost ability to zoom

If you tap a photo all it does is show it alone. You used to be able to zoom in and see details, but that’s been removed from the app. Even the caption of the photo is hidden requiring another tap to see the photo. The inability to zoom in on a photo makes the app considerably worse than the website. It’s baffling they would remove such basic capabilities as zooming a photograph and make it hard to read the caption for it.
