This app really has a great idea. Being able to make your own variants of chess and create your own pieces with rules on how they move is great. But there does seem to be an issue with the way you actually make those rules. I may just be stupid, but when I go to make one and set up the way it should move, it doesn’t work the way it should. For example, I wanted to make a piece that could go four spaces forward, horizontally and diagonally. When you go to make a piece it gives you two options, simple and advanced. I used the simple one where it shows a board and you can put in how many spaces it can move, where a piece can jump to, and you can control whether its able to move or capture. So I set it to where it could slide four spaces forward horizontally and diagonally. But when I made a game to test out how the piece worked, the piece was only able to land on the space four squares forward. In the simple menu, it says that the piece should be able to land on any of the squares unless its path is obstructed. So clearly something isn’t working as intended there. The advanced piece settings are a little confusing as well, and I think that it would better to have the same screen as the simple option showing a board where you can press the buttons and see the squares where it should be able to move, which isn't in the advanced options. But I understand if thats somehow not possible. Overall thats just my small gripe about it and it’s possible that I just haven’t figured something out yet. I hope the developer sees this review and considers changing the movement controls of the advanced section to be like the simple one, so it’s easier to control how it moves while keeping the other cool options you have in the advanced section.

I’ve played Xiangqi and shogi on here. Love the app and the cute pieces. Only issue is the AI is on the weak side and the game is executed online and not local. But it can’t be beat in this niche.
  • Unplayable

Version 1.3.3 and 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 causes Xiangqi to randomly force close the app. Xiangqi and Alber's Courier and Grant Acedrex and Courier AI at easiest level take a long time to accept a move. Blue spinner usually just do nothing loops without indicating possible moves allowed. So I am not allowed to enter a move. Response time is either painfully slow or non-existant. Result is unplayable. Worked for me before the last three recent updates. Needs an Undo button too. Those media playback buttons exit the game instead of playing back the moves list as expected. I recommend these remixed settings as defaults: leaders cannot face, and pawns promote to Lost piece. iPad Air (1st generation) and version 12.x OS battery fast drains with a hot display while blue progress spinner dawdles.

  • Cool App, AI weak

The app is cool, however my main interest in it is to be able to play against the AI which isn’t currently particularly great because the AI is very weak. It doesn’t seem to calculate further than a single move in advance, as in regular chess it fell for simple forks with no compensation - another time it failed to take a minor piece with a pawn. If the AI were significantly improved (all that’s really necessary is some good calculation depth and piece weight assignments) then the app would be great.

Besides the crashing, I keep trying to edit my board but it keeps not saving even when I finish editing (I’m trying to add castling pieces) Edit: just forgot to turn on castling
