My Pocket Replacer

When I heard that Pocket was being sunset, I scrambled to find a solution and I think that this will do just fine. I want to be able to add articles that I don’t have time to read in the moment, so that I can refer to them later, tag the article so that I can group the topics I want to read, and easily save from other sites. Matter ticks all of those boxes, but it also adds features I didn’t know I needed, like the ability to convert those articles to text and listen to them. For an information hog like myself, this has been invaluable because I can listen to the articles I’ve saved in the car or on a walk or while doing the dishes. At first, I was a little bummed out to have to pay for it, but considering I’ve lost all of my saved articles now three times in 30 years of digital existence because of companies going out of business, I’d rather support a company financially and keep it going!
Good experience but…

Overall it does a good work but search needs work urgently
sometimes it works

maybe it will save an article, but don't rely on it to do so
Women authors

Pretty good app. The content is very much lacking. I’m a big proponent of female authors and for whatever reason content from female authors is completely lacking. I’ve “followed” and “favorited” female authors but the content is so narrow that I consistently am not provided with any articles from them. Most of the days out of the week there’s just no options. I’ve falling back to simply finding my own content for which there’s no reason for me to pay for this service anymore.
Pretty solid with a few frustrations

I’m a few months in now, and this app has become part of my daily routine. There are a few things that could be improved to make it perfect: (1) RSS limitations: with a standard like RSS, I don’t understand why so many legitimate feeds are not recognized (2) sometimes I’m afraid to open an article because I don’t want to be flooded with “since you read…” the next day (3) the reading minutes meter seems to not go away unless you uninstall and reinstall—I just don’t want to see this at all. I’m hoping more updates are coming—haven’t seen any updates in a while.
Used to be great

I used to use this app all the time. Now, despite paying for a subscription, the app doesn’t recognize I’ve paid. This feels like fraud.
Great read later app with a UI that’s actually nice

Been using Matter for a couple months now, switched over from Pocket and I’m loving it! The feed is clean and the keyboard shortcuts for highlighting and notes are super convenient. I’ve especially enjoyed the ability to listen to my articles and cleanly save video and text in one queue.
I’d really like the newsletters feature to work better for me. I got it all hooked up with email forwarding, and I can see them come in on the desktop version, but I do most of my reading on my phone, where I cannot find the Inbox. Hoping that this can be added to a menu in the future.
Not a good fit for my workflow or my life

I am not a particular fan of read-it-later apps for general reading. I do have a need for apps that assist with researching or keeping up with topics of varying scope. I want to easily extract information with an eye to acting on it. This app is not notably better than its competitors, Pocket and Instapaper, which were much earlier to market, and a bit less modern. All of them are frustrating to me. All they do is act as an extra inbox, and they do not make me more productive. They all alter and filter the contents of web pages, and often cut essential information like the authors of articles. Then there are other, more widely applicable issues: First, the price: $60/year, and it’s going up in 2024. I think it’s very expensive for what you get. Then the interface, which I find unpleasant. Each entry takes up a lot of room both horizontally and vertically. It seems thick, somehow. Finally, there’s the curation, which is unimpressive.
I’ve lost all my data after update

Will never use it again. My reading list disappeared after update.
A better way to read.

I can’t speak more highly of Matter; for 2+ years now I have been using it to actually read, listen, and reflect, rather than other apps/systems which just help you build a queue but never help you tackle it. Hop on board!
